FOSTER

Fostering a rabbit is one of the most impactful ways to help save a life. Because Honey’s Bunnies is a fully foster-based rescue, we rely on compassionate families to give rabbits a safe, loving place to land while they heal, grow, and wait for adoption. With urgent calls coming in every week, we are always in need of new foster homes. Every family that opens their door makes space for us to say “yes” to the next rabbit who needs help and truly becomes part of their journey to a brighter future.

Thinking about fostering a rabbit? We’re so glad you’re here. Fostering is one of the most meaningful ways to support our rescue, and we want to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Below are answers to our most commonly asked questions to help you understand what fostering involves and how we support you every step of the way.

Fostering a Rabbit – FAQ

Q: Where do I get supplies to care for my foster rabbit?

A: We provide everything you’ll need: an x-pen, blankets, food, dishes, litter, a litter box, hay, toys, and treats. You won’t be out of pocket for any basic care items.

Q: Who is responsible for my foster rabbit’s veterinary care?

A: All veterinary care is fully covered by the rescue. If your foster rabbit has a medical concern or emergency, please contact the foster coordinator immediately so we can guide you through the next steps.

Q: How long is the usual foster commitment?

A: Rabbits are typically with us for 6 months to 1 year before adoption. Ideally, foster families stay with their rabbit until adoption, but short-term fostering is completely okay. Once your foster rabbit is adopted, we’re happy to match you with another bun if you’d like to continue fostering.

Q: What about spay and neuter appointments?

A: All rabbits are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. When your foster rabbit’s appointment is booked, the foster coordinator will contact you with instructions. If you can drive your rabbit to and from the appointment, wonderful—if not, we will arrange a volunteer driver.

Q: I’m going on vacation. Can someone care for my foster rabbit?

A: Yes! We offer bunny boarding for foster rabbits and have volunteers throughout HRM who can bunny-sit. Please reach out in advance so we have time to arrange care.

Q: Can I foster if I have other pets?

A: Absolutely. Many foster families have other animals. Rabbits must always be kept safely separated from other pets, and we can guide you on safe introductions, boundaries, and housing setups.

Q: Can I foster if I have children?

A: Yes! Families with children can absolutely foster. Rabbits thrive in calm, gentle environments, so we ask that children learn how to interact with them quietly and respectfully. We’re happy to provide guidance on safe handling and boundaries.

Q: Can I foster if I rent my home?

A: Yes, you can foster if you rent. We simply ask that you confirm with your landlord that pets are permitted in your unit. Rabbits are quiet and generally very rental-friendly, but it’s important to ensure your housing agreement allows them before fostering.

Q: What if I fall in love with my foster rabbit?

A: It happens all the time! Foster families are always welcome to adopt their foster bunny if it’s the right fit but please get in touch with us to chat first!

Q: One of my friends or family members is interested in adopting my foster rabbit. What should I do?

A: That’s wonderful! Please have them contact us to fill out an adoption application through the rescue so we can begin our standard screening process. Even if you know them personally, all adopters must go through the same approval steps to ensure the rabbit’s long-term safety and well-being. Once approved, we’ll coordinate next steps and keep you updated.

Q: What if my foster rabbit isn’t a good match for my home?

A: That’s okay. Please reach out to the foster coordinator. Our goal is to support both you and the rabbit. We can help troubleshoot or arrange a foster transfer if needed.

Q: Can I foster if I’ve never owned a rabbit before?

A: Yes! Many of our fosters are brand-new to rabbit care. We provide ongoing support, resources, and guidance every step of the way.

Q: Will I get support throughout the foster period?

A: Always. Our team is here to answer questions, provide behavioural and medical guidance, and help you navigate diet, housing, enrichment, and daily care. You are never alone in the foster process.

Q: Do I have to handle meet-and-greets with potential adopters?

A: We coordinate all adoption meetings once applications have been reviewed. After an applicant is approved, we’ll discuss potential meet-and-greets with you. Depending on the rabbit and your comfort level, this may take place in your home or at another agreed-upon location.

Q: Do foster rabbits need to be kept indoors?

A: Yes. All foster rabbits must live indoors for their safety, comfort, and well-being. Outdoor housing is not permitted.

Q: What happens if my foster rabbit shows behavioural challenges?

A: This is common, especially for rabbits who have experienced stress or neglect. We will help you with litter training, diet adjustments, confidence-building, and other behaviour needs. If necessary, we can also arrange a behaviour consult.

Q: Do I need to handle transportation for appointments or rescue needs?

A: You’re welcome to help with transport if you’re able, but it is never required. We have volunteer drivers who can assist whenever needed.

Q: What kind of space do I need to foster?

A: A quiet, bunny-proofed area is ideal. Most fosters use an x-pen setup, which we provide. You do not need a separate room—many rabbits thrive in a sectioned-off area of a living room, office, or spare bedroom.
